The work

There is a register at which the unconscious organises a life from below the threshold of awareness

Beneath coaching. Beneath therapy. Beneath leadership development.

There is the layer at which the patterns are set, before consciousness has weighed in.

It is the layer at which a leader actually leads. The work at Unitive Mind™ begins there.

What it is

Depth psychological work
in the Jungian tradition.

Coaching trains capacity. Therapy attends to wound. Leadership development builds skill. Each has its place. None of them reaches the floor beneath, where the patterns are set.

The work here is depth psychological. It draws on a century of careful inquiry into the structure of the psyche — into the way unconscious material shapes a life from beneath the threshold of awareness, and into what becomes possible when that material is met with seriousness rather than turned away from.

It is not therapy. There is no diagnosis, no treatment frame, no clinical posture. It is not coaching. There is no goal architecture, no behavioural target, no weekly accountability. It is something older and quieter than either — the work of becoming acquainted with what one has not yet been willing to know about oneself.

What It Attends To

The material the unconscious has organised in the dark.

Six Bodies of Material

01

The Autonomous Complexes

The patterns that take over without consent, that speak in one’s voice while pulling in directions one did not consciously choose.

02

The Shadow

What has been excluded from the persona’s account of the self — the disowned competence as much as the disowned aggression. What was left at the side of the road in the work of becoming presentable.

03

The Somatic Intelligence

What the body knows before the mind catches up. The fatigue that arrives before the recognition. The tightening that signals long before the language does.

04

The Internal Parts

The constellation of figures inside a person, each with its own claim, its own history, its own argument with the others.

05

The Shadow

The inherited choreography that shapes a marriage, a friendship, a board meeting. The patterns one is repeating without having chosen them.

06

The Somatic Intelligence

What actually organises a life, beneath the values one consciously espouses. Often at considerable distance from them.

Who Is It For

The senior leader who has reached a ceiling.

The work is for the senior executive who has already done a great deal. Coaching, often. Therapy, frequently. Leadership development, almost certainly. Perhaps long-form analytic work. The kind of person whose thoughtfulness about themselves is not in question.

And who has, nonetheless, reached a ceiling.

The polished answer about why one is tired, or stuck, or quietly unsettled, has stopped being adequate — even to oneself. Something has gone unaddressed in the previous rounds of work, something the available frames could not reach. The work here is the work that begins there: at the limit of what other modalities can do.

What is asks

Slow, sustained, considered attention.

The work cannot be hurried. The unconscious does not respond to the calendar. It responds to a particular quality of attention — unhurried, careful, willing to sit with what is uncomfortable long enough for the discomfort to begin to make sense.

It asks for honesty of a kind that is often inconvenient. It asks that one stop performing competence, including for oneself. It asks that one allow what has been pushed below to come up, and that one not turn away when it does.

It asks for time. A genuine encounter with the deep material of one’s own life is not a six-week intervention. It is a season.

What It Does Not Do

It does not promise transformation.

It does not promise transformation.

The work makes no promise of becoming someone else. The fantasy of transformation — of stepping out of one’s life into a better one — is itself usually a defence. The work is closer to the opposite: the slow, careful work of becoming more honestly the person one already is, with fewer parts of oneself disowned.

It does not promise relief.

Some of what the work surfaces is hard. Sitting with what one had been willing to ignore is not easy work, and the early stages of it sometimes feel worse before they feel clearer.

It does not promise outcomes.

The work does not specify what a life will look like once it has been engaged with at this level. That is between the person and what is asked of them.
